The term Samurai (侍) was initially used to describe the aristocratic warriors of Japan, but it extended to all members of the warrior class who came to power in the 12th century and controlled the government before the Meiji Restoration in 1868.
Utagawa Kuniyoshi (歌川 国芳) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. He is known for his depictions of the battles of legendary samurai heroes. His artwork incorporated aspects of Western representation in landscape painting and caricature; and the range of his subjects included genres such as landscapes, beautiful women, Kabuki actors, cats, and mythical animals.
